Observatoire neige

- comparer les températures en espace ouvert et sous couvert forestier (24 capteurs sont localisés à proximité immédiate d’un poste Météo-France) ;
- étudier le climat des espaces boisés dont le contexte topographique est radicalement différent de celui échantillonné par les postes de Météo-France (échantillonnage des vallées encaissées, des versants abruptes);

Snow Observatory
Objective
The objective is the observation, at fine spatial and temporal scales, of dynamic snowpack, focusing on measures of snow accumulation and the formation of cornices, in order to understand certain processes specific to the Jura, and to quantify the dynamics. Various instruments (thermometers, cameras, etc.) and in situ observations (snow sticks) will be mobilized to monitor the snow.

Problem
Snow is an inseparable part of the Jura. And its characteristics (accumulation, persistence) tend to change due to climate change. As snowdrifts and massive cornices are increasing, it is necessary to take into account their impact on vegetation for use in the management and prevention of risk (at ski resorts, landscaped areas, etc.).
Location and timeline
This project will study the area of Morond / Mont d’Or, which has several sites of interest in the context of this research. Started in 2013, this project will continue through the coming winters.

Climate Observatory
Objective
While the forest covers more than 40% of the Jura, the characteristics of its climate are totally unknown. It is a rich environment of flora and fauna including diverse climate, and deserves to be better known. To date, no forest climate observing system exists in France.
Problem
The observatory aims to:
- compare temperatures in open space and under forest cover (24 sensors are located in the immediate vicinity of a Météo-France station);
- study the climate of woodlands whose topographical context is radically different from the positions sampled by Météo-France (valleys, steep slopes);
- provide diagnostic elements and indicators for further research in botany, entomology, nivology …
Location and timeline
The area of study covers a large part of the Jura region. The data, some of which were acquired in 2011, are recorded every 6 minutes at 40 sites. They will be made available to researchers working in the Jura region.

Partnership
The installation of the sensor network, its maintenance and surveys are conducted with the support of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Jura, in the context of the LEADER program « Haut-Jura: energy of a territory ».
